Significance (By Shelly Crane)

"His eyes opened and he smiled at me like he understood everything, like I was everything."

Publisher: Kiss Me Publications

Significance was genuinely one of my favourite YA paranormal romance books when I was younger.

There was love, the supernatural element, a triangle, good vs evil. It was the perfect recipe.

Funny story: I read this on my kindle when I was about 13, I loved it. But sadly my kindle smashed and died. I didn't know how to recover my books so as far as I knew they were gone too. Years passed, and I wanted to re-read it again, but I couldn't remember the title, character names or the main plot. I thought I had lost it forever; I was so frustrated. It wasn't until last year that I found it by accident; I was so happy. I jumped straight in and relived the character's journey with them.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead)

The series centres around a girl called Maggie. Her mother walked out on her, her adopted brother and her father. So for a time, while her father went into a deep depression, she has had to pick up the slack. To make matters worse, her boyfriend was a cheating douche, and they break up. But she always had her best friend Kyle, who is obviously in love with her. But pretty early on in the book, we are introduced to Caleb, and then the sparks start to fly (seriously).

Do you believe in fate?

This book series seriously makes you question its existence.

I enjoyed the character development of Maggie. At first, she was a slightly depressed girl (understandably though), but after she met Caleb, she realised she had hope and a future ahead of her.

However, this transformation does lean very heavily on the "you just need a man, and everything will be fine" trope. Which I do not condone at all, might I add. It does create an unrealistic expectation of how relationships work. But thankfully, younger Maiya did not take this subliminal message too seriously.

Apart from the low key brainwashing, Maggie comes into her own in this book. She becomes more confident, self-assured and listens to her gut. This force and fire that we get a glimpse of here and there in this first book only grows stronger with each book.

Caleb. What an absolute sweetheart. He was such a joy to read. He was so supportive of Maggie and very protective over her too. It was great to see. He championed (haha, you'll know why that's funny if you read the books) for her just as hard as she did for him. They were a real team, and had electric chemistry; it was just great to see. He made sure that his family were all in order when she came over to his house because he didn't want to overwhelm her. He was just a beautifully crafted character. As was his Grandma, she was indeed my favourite person in his family- so funny and witty.

Even the "baddies" had a great storyline. Crane fleshed out each character so well that I thoroughly enjoyed each page I read. If you are looking for a YA paranormal romance that makes you think about true love, soul mates and all that gooey stuff, then this book is for you.
